2019: NYSC boss tasks INEC on security, welfare of corpers during elections

With 2019 fast approaching, the role members of the National Youth Service Corps play in elections have come to the fore, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) restating that the NYSC was important for electoral success.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Oyo State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Mutiu Agboke said the role of NYSC cannot be overlooked if the outcome of the elections are to be internationally accepted.

The INEC boss said he was at the NYSC Secretariat to appreciate the scheme for the services rendered in the past and to drum the support for the voter education and registration currently ongoing which will ultimately culminate into the general elections coming up next year.

Responding, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Ifeoma Anidobi thanked the INEC Management in the state for seeing the NYSC as a critical stakeholder in the electoral process.

Mrs. Anidobi however urged the INEC boss to look critically at the issues of security and welfare of corps members that would be engaged in election duties.

The State Coordinator expressed optimism that the synergy already existing will blossom to become mutually beneficial to both parties. She also charged the Commission to put proactive machinery in motion so that ugly incidents of past elections do not reoccur.

The two agencies agreed to meet at a later date to fashion out workable arrangement that would ensure smooth operation and delivery of the forthcoming general elections.
