The DSS has released Mr. Akanni Afolabi, the Ekiti State House of Assembly member whom they had kept in detention for 18 days.
The lawmaker was immediately admitted in a private hospital in Abuja for treatment after he regained his freedom on Tuesday
Last week, the Ekiti State government had alleged that Afolabi had died in detention but in reaction, the DSS quickly paraded him sick and very frail.
Reports by Vanguard quoted the lawmaker as saying that he was treated for malaria in the DSS facility after he collapsed two times. He said his release may not be unconnected with his deteriorating health situation, adding that he was not told by the DSS operatives why he was he held.
Afolabi was picked up on March 4 when DSS operatives stormed the premises of the State House of Assembly in Ado-Ekiti.
The Chairman of the Ekiti Assembly Committee on Information, Hon Gboyega Aribisogan, was quoted as saying after Afolabi was released:
“We are very happy about the development. The entire state state is agog with jubilation.
“His incarceration really bothered us.
“I can confirm that every other person detained with him has also been released.
“Immediately he was released, Governor Ayodele Fayose ordered that he be taken into a hospital, which is where he is now.’’
