There is fear at the University of Ibadan following notes purporedly written by Boko Haram, threatening to bomb the institution.
The management of the school is yet to issue an official reaction but both staff and students have become uncomfortable. Security has been strengthened around the campus. The heightened security at the unversity entrance however caused human and vehicular traffic grilock at the school’s main gate.
Reports said some lecturers received the threat in their email boxes while others got it via their social media platforms including WhatsApp.
In the message, the group “al-wilayat al-Islamiyya Gharb Afriqiyyah” described UI as an embarrassment to Nigeria for bringing western education.
It read: “You people are an embarrassment to Nigeria and are the people that brought in western education to Nigeria. You doomed this nation and in turn you all are going to be doomed. Most of you are going to die before independence day. You will not spend the independence day in Peace, you and your students. Detonation will start going from tomorrow till independence day and there is nothing you can do as we are among you. Even you little searches at the gate won’t do anything. By the time we are through with you, your government will be sorry” the message ended.
The institution’s Director of Public Communications, Tunji Oladejo has however described the message as the “handiwork of mischievous people”.
He said: “Such messages emanated from social media messages and it’s a mere rumour. We still had a programme today in the school mosque and all was was peaceful”.
