Renowned geographer and urban planner, Prof. Akin Mabogunje, will be honored on Wednesday by the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP).
Mabogunje, who is also the chairman of the school’s board, clocked 86 years last week.
Eminent scholars and other intellectuals will gather at the Bodija headquarters of the school to discuss the theme: “Decentralized Governance, the People and Development in Nigeria.”
Sub-themes to be discussed include land reform and development imperatives in Nigeria, local governance, decentralized governance and the quest for local development as well as e-local governance in Nigeria.
Discussants include Profs. Ayo Olukotun, Anthony Asiwaju, Peter Adeniyi and Mike Adeyeye.
Mabogunje is the Chairman, Lagos Megacity Development Authority.. He is the first professor of Geography in Nigeria. He was the first African president of the International Geographical Union. In 1999, he was the first African to be elected as a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences, according to Wikipedia.
The Executive Vice Chairman, ISGPP, Dr Tunji Olaopa, described the seminar as one that is addressing Mabogunje’s heartcry.
