Members of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Oyo State on Thursday began the process of revamping the party by holding their first stakeholders meeting in Ibadan.
The party, in a communique issued at the end of the meeting which was held at its State Secretariat, Yemetu, Ibadan, said neither the All Progressives Congress (APC) nor any other political party was capable of delivering people-centred developmental initiatives of Chief Obafemi Awolowo which AD stands for.
It also threw its weight behind calls for restructuring of the country and condemned designation of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization.
The communique, which was signed by a former Minority Whip, House of Representatives, Hon. Babatunde Oduyoye and Dr Akin Onigbinde (SAN), read: “That the AD Afenifere, having studied the unfavourable trend of developments regarding governance in Oyo State, is desirous of restoring the glorious days when good governance was the ultimate goal of politics.
“That it is on record that as it is constituted, neither the All Progressives Congress (APC ) nor any party for that matter, has exhibited the developmental initiatives of Awoism or the leadership qualities in the governance of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The AD is the only political party that possesses that pedigree
“That governance is about the continuous improvement of the lives of the citizens and that AD governments at all levels in Oyo State and will restore the people- centred and citizen-oriented traditions of AD governments. AD will be a party owned by the people of Oyo State, whose will and desires it will relentlessly pursue.
“That the party in all the wards and 33 local governments of Oyo State should commence a mass registration of members beginning from Monday, 25 September, 2017. The venues of the registration exercise across the local governments shall be communicated to the party.
“That all local government chapters of the party should, without much ado, elect their coordinators and forward the names of same to the party secretariat.
“That the party is in support of ongoing clamour for the restructuring of Nigeria through devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, resource control and other components of a truly federalist state.
“That while the AD supports efforts to maintain peace and order in Nigeria, it frowns at the planned military exercise in the South-West and South-South and condemns in strong terms the Operation Python Dance in the South-East and the subsequent designation of IPOB a terrorist organization.”
