As President Muhammadu Buhari leaves for the United States of America on Saturday for a meeting with President Donald Trump, the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday asked Trump to be aware that Nigeria “is now on the brink” under Buhari.
The PDP in a State of the Nation press conference regretted that “President Muhammadu Buhari is on his way to the United States, the home of democracy, whereas back home in Nigeria his admonistration has completely wrecked our democratic order, eroded constitutionally guaranteed roghts of citizens while foisting a siege mentality on our people”
The party said it wants the entire world to know about the unabated killings and clamping down on dissenting voices in the country.
“As we speak, government’s inaction and aloofness have led to escalation of killings in Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kogi, Kaduna, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Ekiti, by insurgents and marauders, who are having a field day as the Presidency has abandoned governance for 2019 re-election bid,” the party said.
It urged “President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS to stand up for democracy and take President @MBuhari to task on constitutional and human rights violations in Nigeria under his watch, as already detailed in the report by the US Department of State.”
It also prayed that the president “would not use the occasion of his visit to Trump to further de-market our nation as he has always done whenever he is outside the country on official assignment”
The party published the text of the press conference on Twitter, tagging world leaders including Trump, Emmanuel Macron of France, Theresa May of Britain, the United Nations and the Paraliament of the United Kingdom.
