Police in the French city of Marseille came under fire from hooded gunmen on Monday morning. Reports said gunmen, numbering up to 10, fired shots at police in the city which Prime Minister, Manuel Valls is due to visit later today.
The area has been evacuated, several schools have been closed and armed being armed policemen have taken over the area.
There were no immediate reports of any casualties.
Le Figaro newspaper reports that the shooting was not terrorism-related but part of a turf war between two local drug gangs.
Prime Minister Valls is due to the city to address public safety issues after a drop in the levels of criminality.
