Two Ege masquerade followers were on Monday arraigned for allegedly killing a woman following violence that erupted during the ongoing egungun festival in Ibadan.
Street urchins reportedly hijacked the festival on Sunday
The accused persons, Sadiq Olalere, 23, and Wasiu Oni, 38, allegedly axed and shot Mrs Sakirat in front of her shop in Ibadan
Olalere and Oni were arraigned on five count charges of conspiracy, murder, unlawful possession of arms, possession of charms and going about in the public with axes and dangerous weapons.
According to the prosecutor, Sergeant Sunday Ojeleye, the accused with others now at large on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at about 2.45pm at SW3/336 Popoyemoja Area, Idi-arere, Ibadan conspire to commit the crime.
Ojeleye also told the court that the display of charms and dangerous weapons by the accused caused terror among members of the public that were going about their lawful duties.
He said the offences contravened sections 324, 316 and 319, 517, 213(b) and 80 Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
In her ruling the magistrate Mrs.Modinat Akani adjourned the case till August 28, 2017 for legal advice from the Director of public prosecution (DPP).
Meanwhile, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1 has condemned the violence that greeted festival.
In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, the Olubadan wondered why despite several meetings and warning with the stakeholders before the egungun festival, some people still went around disobeying the law by inflicting violence on innocent citizens.
