Two petrol tankers exploded in two different parts of the country on Wednesday. Whike one exploded at Festac Lagos, burning up to 20 cars, the other burst into flames in Abuja.
No fewer than 20 vehicles and four commercial motorcycles were burnt when a tanker laden with petrol fell and spilled its content on the Festac Link Bridge in Awuwo Odofin LGA of Lagos. It occured at noon on Wednesday.
The Abuja incident occured at about 5:55pm when a petrol tanker was engulfed by fire at a Conoil filling station, along the airport road in the nation’s capital. The tanker was said to be offloading fuel when the fire started. The fire was eventually put out at about 7:10 p.m. by fire service officials.
Speaking on the possible cause of the fire, an official of the fire services, Gidado Ismail, said,
“Probably there was high temperature while discharging the fuel.”
“There are no casualties and the building is safe. It is only the fuel and the tanker that was affected.”
In the Lagos incident, the tanker, coming from Apple Junction and going to FESTAC Town was ascending the bridge but suddenly rolled back and fell. The impact of the fall separated the tank from the body, resulting in an explosion.
