The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC) did not completely use the voters’ register provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the local government election in the state in February.
The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Friday. He was speaking on the investigation conducted by a committee the commission set up in March over reports of underage voting in the election inquestion which the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in the 44 local governments.
Pictures of children voting in the election had surfaced on social media, sparking outrage among Nigerians and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Yakubu, the commission had given KSIEC the INEC voters’ register to use for the election but investigations showed that the register was not used in most polling units.
The INEC boss, however, pointed out that most of the pictures circulating on the social media were old photos which were not connected to the recent election.
He added that the commission did not have the powers to investigate the conduct of local government elections in any state.
