James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, has resigned after more than five decades of service.
Mr Clapper told the US House of Representatives on Thursday that he had submitted a resignation letter on Wednesday but would serve out the remainder of his term, which ends on January 20.
His said: “I submitted my letter of resignation last night. I feel pretty good. I have 64 days left and I think I’d have a hard time with my wife with anything past that.”
Mr Clapper has served in the job for six years after previously working for the US Air Force and the Defence Intelligence Agency.
