Akinwande Soji-Ojo Following the explosion of a compressed natural gas (CNG) powered car at a NIPCO filling station in Edo State on Thursday, Nigerians have been talking about the suitability of CNG vehicles in the country. The explosion, which occurred at Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State, reportedly left three people injured. Despite the incident, CNG-powered vehicle has been described as an affordable fuel when compared to petrol. The running cost of a CNG vehicle is also said to be less when compared to a petrol vehicle. According to acko.com, an Indian car maintenance site, the top precautions to be taken while using a CNG vehicle are: 1. Say no to unauthorised CNG kits 2. Avoid substandard accessories 3. Install CNG-Compatible spark plugs 4. Get CNG Kit Test Certificate 5. Always start on petrol for engine to warm up before switching to CNG mode 6. Check cylinder and fuel lines for any leaks or damages regularly 7. Service regularly to keep the components in good shape. 8. Follow the rules and regulations prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act while using a CNG vehicle 9. Switch off the ignition while refilling CNG 10. Check cylinder pressure to ensure pressure does not go beyond the manufacturer prescribed while refilling CNG 11. Always try to park CNG vehicle in a shaded or covered area where direct sunlight can be avoided 12. Clean/Replace air and CNG filter at intervals 13. Keep the throttle body clean 14. Renew CNG Compliance Plate once im three years 15. Never smoke inside CNG vehicle 16. Avoid using mobile phone while refilling CNG
