Following bandits invasion and abduction of hundreds of students from Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has ordered the immediate closure of all primary and secondary schools across the 14 local government areas in the state.
Bandits stormed the school located in the governor’s hometown on Wednesday and kidnapped hundreds of students and some teachers.
However, the indefinite closure of schools was disclosed by the state Commissioner of Police, Ayuba Elkana, while addressing newsmen in his office.
“I wish to inform the general public that the executive governor of Zamfara State has ordered the closure of all schools within the state. Both primary and secondary schools that are existing here are now closed with immediate effect,” Elkana said.
He also said the schools would be closed until security improves.
“It’s a threat, you know the bandits will like to go back to kidnap these students. So, for their safety, the schools have to be closed until peace is restored in the state,” he added.
The commissioner of police also said the police are yet to confirm the number of students abducted from the school.
He added that the state government had restricted movement from 6pm to 6am in 13 local government areas.
Elk ana, however, noted that movement restriction in Gusau, the state capital, would be from 8pm to 6am.
