“They attacked some houses along their way, and headed straight to the school.

“They took some of the girls and went into the bush. We don’t know what is happening right now,”Abubakar Jangebe, a resident said.

The number of students that were abducted is still unknown, but residents told the medium that they are about a hundred.

“Many parents are on their way to the school now. There should be a headcount as soon as relevant authorities arrive,” Mohammed Ismail, another resident told TheCable.

The police spokesperson in Zamfara State, Muhammed Shehu, said he will issue a statement on the development later.

Also, the state commissioner for security and home affairs, Abubakar Dauran, confirmed the incident, saying security operatives have been mobilised to the area.

“I can confirm to you now that we have sadly received the report on the abduction of the students of GGSS Jangebe and right now, I am on my way to the school.

“At this moment, l cannot say how many students were taken away by the gunmen until l get there, but we have already mobilised security men and members of the vigilantè who are now in pursuit of the abductors,” he said.

The abduction of the schoolgirls is coming a week after 27 students were abducted by bandits from Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State.

The abductors reportedly rejected a N2.7 million ransom offered to them.
