Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has assured residents that his administration would be providing free food items every quarter in order to ease the present economic hardship in the state.
Ajimobi, speaking on Thursday in Ibadan while speaking at the third phase of the “Ajumose Food Bank’’ initiative, said that the initiative was aimed at eradicating hunger and starvation among the people.
The initiative is part of the pet project of the governor’s wife, to drive away hunger and cater for widows, women and children.
The governor assured the people of the government’s commitment to guarantee their welfare and the continued growth of the state in the face of dwindling revenue allocation and economic recession.
Also speaking, the governor’s wife, Florence Ajimobi, said that the food items would be distributed across the 33 local government areas of the state by September.
“This will see us travelling the length and breadth of the state, across the 33 local governments distributing raw food items to randomly selected beneficiaries and widows.
“It is our hope that this token that we are giving here today will contribute significantly in mitigating the harshness of the current economic situation we find ourselves today.’’
Mrs Ajimobi also pledged her support to the widows and promised to sponsor the secondary school education of 10 children from the widows group.
“I wish to state my commitment to restoring the dignity of widows and stopping the stigma often associated with widowhood.’’
She reassured the people that the Ajimobi-led administration was concerned over the effect of the current economic situation on the people of the state.
While responding, the wife of the Chairman, Ibadan South-Wast Local Government, Mrs Abiola Folarin, commended Ajimobi for initiating Ajumose Food Bank project aimed at alleviating hunger and starvation from the communities.
She applauded the governor’s wife for her various programmes aimed at poverty alleviation, women empowerment and women clinic.
About 3,000 women have drawn from the food bank since the start of the third phase. Some of the women that benefited from the project commended the wife of the governor for her generosity and kindness, especially in alleviating the plight of the people of the state.
