The vice chancellor, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, Professor Olanrewaju Olaniyan, has joined family, friends and associates in celebrating the pioneer Registrar of the institution, Mrs. Olubunmi Siju’ Asunmo, on the occasion of her 60th birthday.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday by the Media and Public Relations Officer of the university, ‘Wale Adeoye, the VC described Asunmo as a team player and a woman of God, whose contributions have helped in the policy directions of the University.
“I join you today in thanking God Almighty as you turn 60. ‘So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy-Romans 9:16.’ It is my prayer on behalf of the Council Chairman, Professor Ayoade Olayiwola Ogunkunle, Senate, Management, Staff and Students that God Almighty continue to strengthen you more in your services to Him, the pacesetter state and the nation as a whole. Happy diamond birthday anniversary celebration, madam,” Olaniyan said.
Asunmo was born on August 15, 1964. She joined the services of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, then known as St. Andrew’s College of Education, on January 1, 1990 as an Administrative Officer II.
She attended Iwo Grammar School, Iwo, between 1977 and 1981 for her Secondary School Education, and Baptist High School, Iwo, between 1981 and 1983 for her Higher School Certificate programme. Asunmo proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where she bagged her B. Ed. Degree in Educational Management and Religious Studies in 1987. She had her compulsory one year NYSC between 1987-1988 at Ojodu Grammar School, Ikeja, Lagos State and later capped her academic up with M.Ed. Educational Management in 1999 from the same premier university. Asunmo also has a Diploma in Computer-Data Processing and Management from the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, in 2008.
The Registrar, having demonstrated her potentials and competence early as an administrative officer, rose through the ranks to the post of Deputy Registrar on October 1, 2005 and had served in virtually all the divisions of the Registry Department. These include the Registrar’s Office, School Office, Academic Affairs Division, Council Affairs Unit, Pension and Gratuity, Establishment Division when both senior and junior establishments were together. She had equally served as the Assistant Director Admin (Sandwich) at the defunct College Directorate of Degree and Sandwich Programmes. The pioneer Chief Administrative Officer, who has served in many college committees and panels, has attended various seminars and conferences both locally and internationally. She resumed duty as the defunct College Acting Registrar/Secretary to Council on August 20, 2020 after the retirement of her former boss, Alh. Teslim Ladimeji Adediran.
Upon the upgrade of the defunct college to a university status, the Governing Council appointed her as the Acting Registrar on August 30, 2023 and confirmed her as the pioneer Registrar and Secretary to Council on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 for a five-year term.
The Registrar is happily married to Rev. Adesoji Aderemi Asunmo and the marriage is blessed with upwardly mobile children.
