There was pandemonium in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Tuesday, after men of the Nigerian Army reportedly stormed the venue where students were protesting against the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.
The students had gone out to protest against the strike as usual, when soldiers armed with guns arrived in a van.
Sporadic gunshots were heard as the students, who are mainly from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko, and some of their colleagues from neighbouring states, scampered for safety.
The students had blocked major highways in the state, including the popular Benin-Ore express way, Akure-Owo highway, among others.
In a viral video, one of the protesting students can be heard saying: “What happened in Lekki is happening again in Ondo!”
Another video showed that the objects being used by the students for the protest had been scattered by the soldiers.
“They’re killing us,” one of the students can be heard said in the video
Students have been protesting against the ongoing ASUU strike for over a week across the country, calling on the Federal Government to accede to the demands of the striking lecturers.
