The Federal Government has suspended indefinitely the operation of microblogging and social networking site, Twitter, in Nigeria.
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Lai Mohammed, made the announced the suspension in a statement on Friday.
The suspension of the social networking service was also shared on the Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Information.
The minister cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
According to Mohammed, the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
However, the platform is still active in Nigeria at the time of filing this report.
