President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the governing councils of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and University of Port-Harcourt which were dissolved following the recent crises that engulfed the two institutions.
The new governing councils would serve for a term of four years, in the first instance, effective from December 28, 2016.

Buhari last year dissolved OAU’s governing council and suspended the selection of new vice chancellor, Prof. Ayobami Salami.
Industrial battle that lasted weeks had broken out between the institution’s Non Academic Staff of Universities, NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU) on one hand, and the governing council on the other hand, over the appointment of Salami as Prof. Bamitale Omole’s successor.

The institution was shut down and activities paralysed as a result of the industrial action.
