President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to three bills – Police Fund bill, Chartered Institute of Management bill and Nigeria Council of Social Works bill.
In a letter addressed to the Senate President on Tuesday, Buhari said he withheld assent to the bills because they were ambiguous.
According to Buhari, the Police Fund bill failed to stipulate sources of funds it intends to use in funding the Police equipment, adding that the proposed funds in the said bill belong to 37 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory and the 774 Local Government Areas of the country.
He said assenting to the bill would conflict the provisions of the 1999 constitution as amended.
“The proposed funds to be used belongs to the 36 States of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory and 774 Local Government Areas”, Buhari said.
The president’s letter was read by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over Tuesday’s plenary.
Senate President Bukola Saraki was in court for continuation of his false assets declaration trial.
