President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, to immediately recommend a qualified person for appointment, as an acting Vice Chancellor for the university.
In a letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the President directed the Senate not to consider any of the candidates who earlier contested for the position.
Buhari recently dissolved the school’s governing council and suspended the selection of new vice chancellor, Prof. Ayobami Salami.
Industrial battle that lasted weeks had broken out between the institution’s Non Academic Staff of Universities, NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU) on one hand, and the governing council on the other hand, over the appointment of Salami as Prof. Bamitale Omole’s successor.
The institution was shut down and activities paralysed as a result of the industrial action.
