An aide of President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the defection of Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a cryptic post shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday morning, the president’s Personal Assistant on Digital and New Media, Bashir Ahmad, confrimed that Matawalle has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.
“So Zamfara is back home! Welcome Matawalle✊,” Ahmad wrote.
The defection has, however, not been confirmed by the governor.
Recall that six PDP governors had in April visited Matawalle, in order to persuade him from joining the APC.
The governors, are Seyi Makinde of Oyo; Nyesom Wike of Rivers; Bala Mohammed of Bauchi; Darius Ishaku of Taraba; Umar Fintiri of Adamawa and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto
Matawalle was elected on the platform of the PDP after the Supreme Court nullified the victory of the APC in the 2019 elections in the state due to an internal party crisis. Before then, Zamfara was an APC state with the governor and majority of the federal and state lawmakers from the ruling party.
Prior Ahmad’s announcement, Matawalle had reportedly dissolved the Zamfara State Executive Council, a move seen as part of preparation to join the APC.
