President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, have been cleared of corruption allegations.
Buhari said this in a letter to the Senate, renominating Magu as substantive chairman of the EFCC.
President Buhari, in the letter read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday, said the duo have been cleared of the charges hanging on their necks after, especially as the signatory to the charges against especially Mr. Lawal lack majority assent.
Buhari who submitted that Magu be renominated also said that he has been unable to act on the Senate’s Ad Hoc committee’s report that gave recommendations against Babachir Lawal based on the following reasons; That only 3 out of the 9 members of the Ad-hoc Committee append their signature on the report against him and as such, it becomes a minority report and not a committee report.”
Secondly, that Engr. Babachir Lawal was not given an opportunity to defend himself before a panel of the Ad-hoc Committee and that the Company alleged to be owned by Mr. Babachir Lawal was not invited to defend itself on the allegations laid since its decision forms the fulcrum of the Senate’s resolution on the committee report.”
