Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced Uduak Akpan, the first accused in the murder of Akwa Ibom job seeker, Iniobong Umoren, to death by hanging.
Shortly after he was sentenced to death by Justice Bassey Nkanang on Thursday, Akpan reportedly attempted to escape.
It took the intervention of the police to foil the attempted escape.
The convict was sentenced to death by hanging and life imprisonment in the two charges of murder and rape levelled against him.
However, the court discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan and sister, Anwan Bassey, the 2nd and 3rd accused persons, who were standing trial for accessory after the fact to murder.
Umoren was declared missing on April 29, 2021, after her friend raised an alarm on Twitter.
Akpan had lured Umoren out of her home with a fake job interview.
Umoren was raped and killed in Akpan, who the police in Akwa Ibom State described as a serial rapist.
She was buried in a shallow grave in Akpan’s family house where the crime took place.
Her body was later discovered in the shallow grave on May 2, 2021.
