Workers of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, protested half naked today addng a fresh dimension to the industrial crisis rocking the institute.
Half naked women, joined by men, chanted anti management songs in front of the institute along the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode road.
The angry workers also barricaded the institute’s main entrance with loads of sands and log of woods hangers bearing various inscriptions. They were also joined by members of the community.
A statement jointly signed by Chief Yekeen Ogunyode, the Baale of Odo Ona nla, and Comrade Solomon Adebiyo accused the institute’s director, Prof Malachy Akoroda of embarking on white elephant projects at the expense of research.
They also accuse him of illegally proscribing the three workers unions in the institution.
On why the community leaders took sides with the protesting workers, the Baale, Chief Ogunyode said: “We have made several attempts to ensure that this matter is settled but the Director is not ready to listen. We cannot continue to fold our arms and watch this institute rot or taken away from our land , most of our people are here, we want peace and I think the peace cannot return to this place until Akoroda is removed.
Prof Akoroda could not be reached as at the time of filing this report neither was anyone available to speak on his behalf.
