The Nigeria Customs service has impounded 31 containers fully loaded with Thai parboiled rice imported from China. The import was falsely declared as yeast at the Tincan island container terminal in Lagos.
Top customs management of the Tincan Island command disclosed this on Saturday, saying that the false declaration was done by an importer known as destiny limited who is in the habit of shortchanging government.
Each of the 31 impounded containers were carrying 14,000 bags of rice.
The customs Area comptroller Yusuf Bashir disclosed that the actual duty for the 31 containers of rice is estimated to cost more than 70 million naira.
