Driver crushes pedestrians in Tokyo on New Year’s Day marking first terror attack in 2019

What could be described as the first terror attack in 2019 has been recorded as a car deliberately ploughed into pedestrians in Harajuku, Tokyo on New Year’s Day.

The incident happened 10 minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day at Takeshita Dori in Harajuku.

According to Mirror UK, local media reports said the driver has since told police that he “intended it to be a terror attack”. Eight people were injured, including a man in his teens.

The 20-year-old man driving the car allegedly told police: “I raised a terror attack”.

It was gathered that the car had been rented and the driver fled the scene but was arrested 20 minutes later.

It’s believed the driver will be charged with attempted murder as he made a statement to police saying: “It caused terrorism”
