The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero from its custody.
Ajaero was arrested on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as he was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom.
But in a terse statement posted on its X account on Tuesday, NLC said Ajaero has been released.
“Breaking news… Comrade Joe Ajaero released from DSS detention. The struggle continues, we can’t be silenced,” the statement read
The union had on Monday demanded the unconditional release of Ajaero by the DSS.
In a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency meeting in Abuja, the National Administrative Council (NAC) of the NLC said the labour leader should be released before “midnight today.”
The body subsequently placed its affiliates, state councils and civil society organisations on “high alert.”
