Nineteen students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have been awarded scholarship by the Deacon Oluwole Alle Memorial Egbe Omo Oduduwa, a Florida based organisation.
The students, who were drawn from the eight Yoruba speaking states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and Kogi, are from different departments with best cumulative grade point average (CGPA), irrespective of gender or religious background.
A release by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, quoted the deputy director of the institution’s Directorate of Linkages and Sponsored Research, Professor Bukky Ojo, as advising the beneficiaries to face their studies and make good grades to justify the huge financial and material investments of their parents and guardians on them.
While congratulating the beneficiaries, the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Professor Kehinde Taiwo, urged them to put the money into good use that would further enhance their scholastic experience.
She said:
“The people who sent you this huge amount of money have denied themselves of some luxury in order to help you achieve your objectives and fulfil your dreams of becoming somebody important in future. So, do not engage in anything that can truncate the lofty ideas you have set for yourselves, thereby wasting this investment. Therefore, be more focused”.
The Dean, Students Affairs, Dr. Lateefat Durosimi, congratulated the awardees, encouraging other students to work much harder so that they too could be recipients of such gesture in future.
President of the Pharmacy Students Association, Mr. Tunde Okoya, thanked the donor for their kind gesture and “for investing their hand-earned fortunes into the development of education in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, ten students of the institution have benefited from a merit award scheme initiated and funded by one of the GSM service providers in Nigeria – Etisalat.
The students, eight of whom were in part two (2) in different departments in the University, and the remaining two (2) students who were in part three (3), had their bank accounts credited with money.
Leading the pack, from the management sciences were Ayodele Israel Aduragbemi with a CGPA of 5.00, Ilori Temitope Janet, a part three student (CGPA 4.95) and Tijani Yusuf Olatunji (CGPA, 4.90) while Adelowo Boluwatife (CGPA 4.90), Ikezogwo Oluchi (CGPA 4.88), and Ogbobu Chukwufunmnanya (CGPA 4.79) are from the electrical electronics department.
Others, from computer science, who also benefited from the largesse include Thompson Ajayi (4.56), Kehinde Emmanuel (4.51), Osunkunle Olarewaju (4.43) and Afolabi Michael (4.43).
The vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Bamitale Omole, who was represented by the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Professor Charles Akanbi, commended the students for their brilliance, urging them to keep their heads much higher in the pursuit of academic excellence and laurels.
