Mrs Amina Zakari, a National Commissioner of INEC and a step-niece of President Muhammadu Buhari, is being blamed for failing her commission’s logistics operations as a result of which the general elections scheduled to begin today were postponed few hours before polls opened.
While announcing the postponement early Saturday, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, blamed it on logistics failure.
Zakari is the Chairman of the INEC Logistics committee, according to information available in INEC’s website.
She is a member of several other INEC committees including Planning, monitoring and strategy committee.
Her appointment into the leadership of the election umpire in the first place has remained controversial owing to the fact that she is,
Zakari, is related to President Muhammadu Buhari who appointed her into the leadership of INEC which will conduct an election in which Buhari himself is a candidate.
Although many still argue that Zakari is Buhari’s biological niece, evidence available shows that she is only related to the president by marriage and not by blood. According to the evidence and accounts of family members,
the applicable relationship between Zakari and Buhari is that of a step-niece and a step-uncle. And they are indeed very close.
Her appointment and subsequent drafting into critical committees of the 2019 election planning has remained controversial. The fears of bias heightened when she was named head of the logistics committee of the INEC Collation centre for the presidential elections of which her uncle (by marriage) is a contestant.
So, when Yakubu blamed logistics for the postponement, many Nigerians rushed to the INEC website to see who was head of logistics. And they saw Amina Zakari literally staring them in the face!
