The senator-elect for Zamfara West, AbdulAziz Yari, has rejected the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s appeal that he should step down for Senator Godswill Akpabio for the position of the Senate President, saying he will contest seat.
Yari, who is the immediate past governor of Zamfara State, said the contest for the Senate President will be based on constitutional provisions and not instructions from anyone.
While reacting to the news that Tinubu and All Progressives Congress (APC) governors are backing Akpabio, Yari told newsmen on Saturday that the contest is Senators’ business, backed by the 1999 Constitution to choose their leaders within themselves and not based on instructions from anyone.
“What is going to happen that day, it is going to happen based on the instructions of the constitution and not from anyone,” he said.
Recall that the APC leadership, led by Tinubu had on Friday endorsed Akpabio as the preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency seat in the 10th National Assembly, with Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, dropping out of the race.
