Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Kayode Fayemi has inaugurated a 17-man committee to prepare a roadmap for the solid minerals sector.
The committee, headed by Professor Ibrahim Garba, is expected to produce a 25-year action plan for the transformation of the solid minerals sector. The plan will contain a short-term action plan of 24 months, mid-term plan of 10 years and long-term plan of 25 years.
Fayemi, while inaugurating the committee on Monday in Abuja,said that it is at liberty to identify sub-sectional activities along the mineral value chain that will enhance the rapid development of the industry.
He charged members to take the assignment with passion and commitment, saying that the assignment is critical as the ministry will be counting on them.
Chairman of the committee, Professor Ibrahim Garba while thanking the ministry for giving them the privilege to serve the nation in that capacity, pledged the determination of the members to take the responsibility very seriously.
The committee which was given three weeks to complete its assignment has amongst its terms of reference to identify hindrances to development of mineral resources of Nigeria, identification of pathways to overcome such barriers, prioritisation of activities and provision of time frames for all activities, creation of models and scenarios for successful implementation and monitoring of activities and development of a consensus strategy for buy-in by all stakeholders in the industry.
