The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, has ordered the trial of four police officers for their role in the escape of the two armed robbery suspects from the custody of the state Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
The two suspects, Rotimi Adeyeye and Bukola Adeoye were said to have been transferred to SARS from the State Anti- Cultism section after spending 16 days in detention but escaped the same day at the SARS office.
The two suspects were said to be members of a notorious robbery gang terrorising the residents of Odopo Ijoka, in Akure, but were arrested by men of the anti Cultism
section.
But the suspects reportedly escaped from the SARS office with their hands handcuffed.
In the petition written and addressed to the State Commissioner of Police, one the robbery victims, Mr Samuel Arifalo, alleged that the two suspects invaded his apartment around 2:30 am on April 30, 2018, and made away with valuables
His words: “The two suspects who used to live in the neighbourhood invaded my house with gun and cutlass and forced my wife and I to undress and then demanded sex from her.
“They threatened to shoot us if we made any noise. He brought my wife back after collecting the keys to her shop. After they left, we discovered that some items were removed from our apartment and my wife’s shop.”
He said the robbers made away with items which include LED TV, four handsets, cash, recharge cards, bottles of wine, wrist watches and cartoons of malt.
The State Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Femi Joseph, said on Thursday that detectives from the state police are on the trail of the suspects, assuring that the two suspects would be arrested soon.
He disclosed that the four policemen who allowed the suspects to escape have been arrested and would be tried for negligence of duty and their role in the escape by the suspects.
