Some angry youths reportedly beat a policeman to pulp in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos, because he allegedly obstructed them from buying petrol.
According to Punch, the youths, amounting to about 50 in number, had arrived at the filling station since 4 AM with their jerry cans to buy petrol.
A Safer Highway Patrol policeman had arrived at a filling station in Ojodu, and got involved in an altercation with a group of young men who had stormed the place to buy fuel.
It was through this confrontation that the policeman got beaten to the point that his uniform was torn.
Some Safer Highway Patrol policemen were said to have attempted calming down the youths, also accusing the beaten policeman of making them angry.
One of the youths identified as Olamide, gave an account of the incident.
He said:
“I have been here since 6am to buy fuel. At some point, the attendants said they would not sell to people with jerrycans. We tried talking them out of that decision. Then, the policemen came to the scene, and started harassing people.
“One of the officers attacked a young man. So, some youths became angry and punched the policeman. The youths tore his uniform and one of the attackers escaped with the policeman’s cap.”
It took the combined efforts of the Police and officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission to restore order at the place.
