A JSS 2 student of the Government Science School, Lafia, Nasarawa State was on Sunday night killed by a vehicle reportedly driven by Khaleel Al-Makura, the son of the state governor.
Reports said that the deceased student identified as Amos Ovey had went outside the school to buy batteries for his lamp as there was no light in the school as all the students were making their way to class for prep.
As he made to cross the road, a vehicle in top speed crushed him to death.
He was killed as he made to cross the road.
According to an eyewitness, the driver, infamous for rough driving, would have been lynched if he had not identified himself as the governor’s son.
Students of the school trooped into the streets on Monday in protest of the killing.
Police Area Commandant in charge of Lafia, Maikudi Shehu, while confirming the incident, said the culprit was already in detention. He said the car was also in police custody and assured that justice will be done.
Commissioner of Education in the state, Tijjani Ahmed, while addressing the angry students, appealed to the students and family of the deceased to remain calm, while assuring them that the culprit would be brought to book.
He appealed to the family to take solace in God, saying the governor had already constituted a committee that would meet with the family and begin burial arrangement for the deceased.
