Senator Teslim Folarin, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the April 11 governorship election has been blamed for the party’s electoral woes in the state.
Speaking on behalf of a socio-political group, Progressive Youth Frontiers (PYF), Oyo state chapter, Comrade Abiodun Adeniyi, the group’s secretary, lamented in a statement that Folarin’s inordinate ambition coupled with the selfish aims of some of the party’s leaders, was responsible for the PDP’s electoral disaster.
The group slammed the duo of Folarin and leader of the party, Chief Yekeen Adeojo, for ignoring calls of party members who wanted Senator Rashidi Ladoja in the fold as the party’s governorship candidate.
According to the group, those who worked with Ladoja at the 11th hour were only saving democracy and sowing the seed of strengthening the PDP in Oyo State to which Ladoja could have returned after winning the election.
The statement added: “These same retrogressive elements pushed Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mr Seyi Makinde, Elder Wole Oyelese and others out of the party just to gratify self-serving ends.”
“They took hold of the National Working Committee of the PDP in Abuja, embarked on a zero-sum game and tilted the party to a near abyss all because of selfish interest and unrealistic ambition,” the statement said.
The group maintained that the results of the governorship election and the abysmal performance of the PDP is a pointer to the non-popularity of the candidate it fielded as well as the waning influence of some of the leaders.
The group, however, praised the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and others who stood by the PDP in cash and kind, and enjoined all stakeholders to learn from past mistakes and restructure the party for future challenges.
