A suspected al-Shabab fighter held at a police station in western Kenya has grabbed a gun and shot at officers, leading to a hostage situation, according to officials and local media.
According to Al Jazeera quoted Inspector General Joseph Boinnet as saying that that police has surrounded the Kapenguria police station to bring the stand-off to an end without giving any details about casualties.
Another police officer, who declined to be name, told the Reuters news agency that at least four officers were killed and that figure could rise.
But Kenyan television channel KTN said as many as six officers had died.
The hostage-taker was suspected of recruiting for Somali armed group al-Shabab, a police officer said.
