The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has set June 30, 2016 as the effective date for all telecom networks in Nigeria to set up a DND list (Do Not Distrub) for their customers.
The DND list prevents unsolicited text messages from being sent to customers’ phone numbers.
The NCC said it has issued a directive to service providers to create a short code “2442” on their networks for consumers to opt-in into their DND.
Once it is effective, all you need do is dial “2442” to avoid those unsolicited messages.
On its Twitter handle on Thursday, the NCC said customers can “call the NCC contact center 622 for redress when there’s a breach”
According to information obtained from the Legal and Regulatory Services Department of the NCC, operators will face a N5 million fine for non-compliance.
AÂ total of 13 Mobile Network Operators were issued with the directive, it was gathered. They include: MTN, Globacom, Airtel, Etisalat, Visafone and Smile. Others are Starcomms, Megatech Engineering Limited, Gicell Wireless Limited, Danjay Telecoms, Gamjitel, Multilinks and Natcom.
