Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Ighoho, has been released from detention facility by the Government of Benin Republic.
His counsel, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN), who confirmed this in a statement issued on Monday, said Igboho was released from prison to his medical practitioners under the agreement that he should not leave the medical centre or Cotonou for any reason.
“Praises should be given to two prominent Yoruba personalities to wit Prof Wole Soyinka and Prof Akintoye for this turn around in our client’s matter,” Alliyu said.
Earlier on Monday, the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, had in a statement announced the release of Igboho.
The statement issued by Ilana Omo Oodua’s spokesperson, Mr. Maxwell Adeleye, said the activist was released to Yoruba leader, Prof. Banji Akintoye; French language expert, Adeniran by the Benin Republic Government.
The statement read: “Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, has been released by the Government of Republic of Benin.
“The Activist was released on Monday to a Yoruba Leader and Leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Banji Akintoye and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Alana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.
“Akintoye described the release of Ighoho as a triumph of truth over darkness in Yorubaland.”
Igboho, who escaped from a deadly raid on his Ibadan residence by the operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) on July 1, 2021, was arrested in Benin Republic while trying to board a flight to Germany on July 19, along with his wife, Ropo.
