A Nigerian has reportedly swindled a New Zealand woman of $250,000 in an internet love scam.
They allegedly met online before the Nigerian man, identified as Akintunde Vincent Abiodun, charmed the woman.
Abiodun identified himself to the woman as Christopher Williams.
The alleged conman convinced his victim to send him more than $243,668, by reassuring her he would repay the money from a large fortune he amassed from a family heirloom worth more than $16 million.
The woman believed the money she loaned Abiodun would be used by him to relocate to New Zealand, where the two would settle down together.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is investigating Abiodun, and he is set to be arraigned once the investigation is complete, local press has reported.
“She alleged that the money she sent to the suspect were received in Malaysia and Nigeria by persons bearing Norisha, Jalan Klan, and Mohammed Haizam Bin Fauzin – All of them claimed to be friends of Akintunde,’ EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren was quoted as saying.
