The Senator representing Imo East in the National Assembly, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection letter of Onyewuchi, who was elected on the platform of Labour Party (LP) was read during Tuesday’s plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Imo State Governor and chairman of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Sen Hope Uzodimma, was in the chamber when the letter was read.
Onyewuchi based his communication on Section 68(1g) of the Constitution.
“This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored my earlier election into the Nigerian Senate.
“The communication is therefore made pursuant to Section 68(1g) of the Constitution of the fFederal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.
“Imo sState and the entirety of the South East remain united under the leadership of our performing governor, His Excellency, Hope Uzodimma,” the lawmaker said.
Thereafter, Akpabio directed the sergeant-at-arms to hand Onyewuchi a new seat on the aisle of the majority lawmakers.
The Imo Senator’s defection reduced the number of LP Senators in the upper legislative chamber to five.
