Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, trooped out on Friday to protest against the incessant road accidents in the town, involving heavy duty trucks.
The protest was ignited by the death of a student, simply identified as Micheal, who was killed by a trailer, on Thursday evening.
It was gathered that Micheal just returned to Akungba-Akoko to write his exams before the trailer accident claimed his life
After killing the deceased, it was learnt, the driver of the truck attempted to run away but was arrested and handed over to the police by residents of the community.
The protesters gathered in front of the school gate, barricading the Owo-Ikare Akoko road, chanting various solidarity songs.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, later addressed the students.
He said another barricade will be erected, adding that the state government will ensure the dualisation of the road.
The students, however, demanded immediate action.
The students have also created #SaveAAUA and #SaveAkungba on microblogging site, Twitter.
According to the students, in 2021, they lost over 12 of their colleagues and over 30 residents of the community to trailer accidents.
At the time of filing this report, the protest is still ongoing while the security men were trying to make the road free for the motorists.
