The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a trigger-happy policeman shot dead a young man in the Ajah area of the state, on Tuesday.
A video of the incident had circulated on social media.
It was learnt that the young man, identified as Gafaru Buraimoh, of Happy Land Estate, Ajah, had gone to buy petrol when he was gunned down by a police inspector.
The culprit was said to have been disarmed and apprehended by his colleagues.
In the video, policemen were seen shooting teargas to dispel the crowd.
Reacting to the incident in a statement posted via the official Twitter account of the Police, @PoliceNG, the Lagos State Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the officer involved in the shooting had been apprehended.
“At About 2330hrs of Tuesday, December 06 2022, a shooting incident involving men of Ajah Division, resulted in the unfortunate death of Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah. The officer behind the shooting, an Inspector of Police, was immediately disarmed and has been detained, as a full-scale investigation has commenced,” he said.
Hundeyin also disclosed that the family of the victim has been contacted over the incident.
“The Lagos State Police Command through the Area Commander, Elemoro and Divisional Police Officer, Ajah has since notified and established contact with the family.
“The Command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served,” he added.
