Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has promised the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, the chiefs, sons and daughters of Ibadanland that he will not interfere in the Ibadan traditional chieftaincy system.
Makinde stated this on Tuesday at a reception to mark the installation and 86th birthday of the 14th Iyalode of Ibadanland, High Chief (Mrs) Theresa Laduntan Oyekanmi, JP, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mrs Funmi Orisadeyi solicited the support of the traditional council for the progress of the state.
He said: “I pray that God grant Iyalode long life to serve the people. I want to reiterate my commitment not to interfere in the traditional chieftaincy system in Ibadan.
“My resolve is that as your son, I am determined to support you and bring glory to our traditional system and institution.
“I also seek your cooperation in this regard. God bless our town, state and country.”
Earlier, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji prayed for long life and fortune on the throne for High Chief Oyekanmi.
Dignitaries from all walks of life attended the ceremony. They include High Chief Lekan Balogun, Chief Sharafadeen Alli, Chairperson, Oyo state Market Leaders’ Council, Chief Mrs Hamdalat Lawal Iyadunni, amongst others.
