A man set himself on fire near the White House on Wednesday morning.
Video of the incident posted online showed the unidentified man walking calmly across the Ellipse near the Washington Mall, an area popular with tourists, with flames covering his body.
Several seconds later, U.S. Secret Service staff run towards him with a fire extinguisher to quell the blaze. There were however reports that the man was wearing a protective suit to protect him from the flames.
He reportedly suffered burns on 85% of his body and was transported to a nearby hospital with ‘life threatening’ injuries.
