There are currently conflicting reports of a coup against the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi.
Soldiers have stationed themselves outside the state broadcaster in the centre of the capital, Bujumbura.
An army General, Major General Godefroid Niyombareh was quoted as saying that Nkurunziza and his government had been dismissed.
But Burundi’s presidency, in a message posted on Twitter, said an attempted coup had “failed”.
“The situation is under control, there is no coup in Burundi,” the message read.
There are jubilation in the streets of Burundi but the status of the coup is yet to be known.
President Pierre Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania meeting other East African leaders to discuss the crisis.
