There was pandemonium in Akure, the capital of Ondo State capital on Wednesday, as the church where a one-year-old boy, Gold Kolawole, was kidnapped during a church service in November, was set ablaze by an angry mob.
It was gathered that no fewer than two people, including a police officer were feared dead and several others injured during the attack.
The General Overseer of the Church, Prophet Babatunde Alfa, was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) last Tuesday over the missing boy.
According to reports, trouble started when some members of the public noticed some members of the church holding the mid-week service despite the outcry from the public over the missing boy.
It was gathered that those who attacked the church were not happy over the insensitivity of the church towards the matter, especially when there were rumours that the body of the boy was exhumed at the altar of the church.
According to a reliable source, the church members resisted the mob and invited police which infuriated the mob, leading to setting the church on fire and some other houses within the area.
No fewer than four cars were set ablaze and other properties destroyed during the fracas that ensued between the mob and some loyalists of the General Overseer of the church.
