Nigerians woke up to the shocking news of Stephen Keshi’s death. Details of circumstances surrounding his sudden death are beginning to trickle in. One major fact is that the “Big Boss” never recovered from the death of his wife, Kate.
Kate, whom Keshi fondly called “Nkem” died in December 2015 after a long battle with cancer. So, Stephen Keshi died with a broken heart.
His brother-in-law and agent, Emmanuel Ado, who spoke to Channels TV this morning said they have been managing Keshi since his Kate died last year. They knew something was wrong but there was nothing they could do. Kate was everything to Keshi. He was lonely after Nkem’s departure.
They were married for 35 years. He watched the love of his life battle and lose to cancer for three years
A source said Keshi, 54, had become hypertensive “but was managing it very well… always taking his medications and checking his blood pressure very regularly”.
It was gathered that Keshi, who was due to travel to the US Wednesday evening, started complaining of excruciating pains in his legs a few minutes to midnight.
He was rushed to the hospital when the pains would not subside. According to his family, the preliminary cause of death was given as “cardiac arrest”.
When Kate died, Keshi was quoted as saying:
“She was ill for a while now and I’m still in shock of this great loss.
“She is more like a sister to me and was the rock behind me and everything I do. My love for her was at first sight.”
They had four children.
