Former governor of Ogun State and a former Director-General of Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, is on his way to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that nullifies his resignation from partisan politics published on Saturday.
Daniel, who had resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while announcing that he was quitting politics, said on Sunday, that his supporters were pleading with him to lead them to the APC.
The former governor who ruled the state for eight years, had convened a stakeholders meeting of his supporters under the aegis of OGD Political Family at his Sagamu home where he formally announced his withdrawal from partisan politics.
He disclosed that his foray into politics was accidental and necessitated by the need to “awaken the sleeping giant,” Ogun State from slumber and having met that need, it was important that he leaves the stage when the “ovation is loudest.”
Daniel lamented that he has been “bartered, bruised and called names because of politics,” hence his resolve to quit even and a time there is much outcry against “sit tight leaders.”
His supporters however reportedly told him that they were satisfied with his decision to leave PDP but that he should lead them to the ruling party.
Daniel played a significant role in the emergence of Dapo Abiodun as Ogun State governor-elect, having directed his supporters to work for Abiodun, who contested under the APC.
After Daniel announced his ressignation from politics, Abiodun held a private meeting with him at his (Daniel’s) Maryland, Lagos residence, but details of the parley were not made public.
But on Sunday, the former governor confirmed to reporters that his supporters were mounting pressure on him to lead them to APC.
“Basically, they said I could resign from PDP… they said I must lead them to APC and they also said I could not retire from politics. That is the summary of what I heard,” he said.
Asked if he was ready to join APC, Daniel said, “What else can I say? My people have spoken.”
Daniel narrated how he failed at getting Hon. Ladi Adebutu as well as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to work together after the court had validated Senator Buruji Kashamu as the PDP governorship candidate. He also lamented that members of his political family failed to listen to him on a number of occasions.
The loyalists who took turn to speak, based their demands on the fact that their efforts contributed to the emergence of the APC candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as the governor-elect of the state .
One of his supporters, Ifekayode Akinbode led other members of the OGD Political Family to prostrate for Daniel, with the women holding his legs, pleading passionately that he should lead them to APC.
To arrive at a final resolution, the PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central district in the February 23 National Assembly election, Solomon Sanyaolu, put the matter to a voice vote to decided whether to remain in PDP or join the APC. The supporters unanimously agreed to join APC, and the shouts of “APC” and “Next Level” rented the air.
