Members of the Non Academics Staff Union (NASU), of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Wednesday, protested the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The protesters were joined by members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, OAU chapter. They barricaded roads leading to the Senate Building and restricted vehicular movement.
The workers accused the governing council of flouting court order that restrained it from appointing a new Vice Chancellor just as the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tale Omole was also accused of engaging in corrupt act while in office.
Speaking with newsmen during the protest, NASU chairman, OAU chapter, Mr Ademola Oketunde, faulted the governing council led by Prof. Rowland Ndoma-Egba, over the appointment, saying its action was a case of clear disregard for court order.
But reacting, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju insisted that the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami followed due process. He said anyone who can prove that the outgoing vice chancellor had engaged in corrupt act should approach the relevant authorities.
